Surf lesson with Will Tant and Friends

I recently had the opportunity to support the Junior Lifeguard program in my hometown of Flagler Beach, Florida.  On July 4, a bunch of my friends and I raised money for this program by volunteering to give surf lessons. The lessons were $20 a person and we raised over $1500 in three hours.

By far the best spectacle of the event was seeing just how stoked the kids were when they caught their first waves.  There is a look in the eyes of a child when they first experience the joy of surfing and oddly enough that same look was in all of my friends eyes even though we have been surfing almost our entire lives. Joy is a word that I have a hard time describing, but my friends and I figured out one way to experience it…simply teach kids how to do something that you love to do.

There is magic in teaching kids. And, when you are teaching them something that has brought all of us so much comraderie and joy the result is nothing but smiles for everyone.  Of course we had a couple of frowns whenever a board and one of the kids decided to wrestle one another, but for the most part we all walked away feeling the blessing of giving back to the community.

Even if you did not surf there were community members that volunteered their talents. Local artist Patrick Maxcy was on hand and had the kids involved in painting.  They ended up making a really unique mural that captured the spirit of the event.

After the surf lessons, Patrick and his fiancé Jessica and myself walked over to Sully's Surf and Skate in Flagler Beach to spend a couple hours promoting Jedidiah and the Community project.  Sully's recently opened in Flagler Beach and are the sole source of Jedidiah gear in the community. We set up the Jedi tent and they had a live DJ mixing some great music, which had us sporadically testing out our dance moves. Patrick is fairly talented dancer and a former High School art teacher. Some of Patrick's students stopped by the tent and submitted stories to the Community project.

At the end of the day we packed up shop and spent the rest of the evening with family.
