Surfsavestheplanet
By Coy Lindsey, Lakeland, FL

I didn't grow up surfing, not because I didn't have the desire, but because I lived in Ohio.  I moved to Florida for graduate school and soon met friends who introduced me to surfing.  I was hooked.  I'm still trying to catch up to everyone else's skill level due to the lost years in OH, which makes me somewhat of a wanna be surfer.  Anyway, surfing put me face to face with creation and some of its beauty and power.  I realized that to surf I had to recognize my relationship to the ocean, because without it waves wouldn't exist.  Before long, I coudn't deny a responsibillty to take care of and give back to the source of the waves sent my way.  Out of this came a book I just finished and will be coming out this Fall 2008 titled Perfect Wave.  In the book, I use surfing stories to help others understand and hopefully embrace our responsibility to take care of, not only the ocean, but all of the earth.  Yes, I do believe surfing can help change the world.  It changed me and will hopefully change others in the way we care for the world's environment.
